Virtually everyone has fantasized about what it would be like to be granted three wishes by a magical being. But what if the cost of having your dreams come true was a horrible toll you never expected? This iconic short story is a must-read for fans of the horror genre.
Jacobs was an English author of both short stories and novels. While much of his work was humorous, he is most well-known for the story of the Monkey’s Paw, published in two different published collections of short story.
In order to drive home the story’s theme “Be careful what you wish for” and to underscore the idea that no wish is without the possibility of negative consequences, I showed the students the Simpson’s episode that riffs on The Monkey’s Paw. In it, Homer uses his final wish to ask for a very specific turkey sandwich, but alas, the turkey is dry.
‘The Monkey’s Paw’ is one of W. W Jacobs’s most famous short stories. In ‘The Monkey’s Paw’, Jacobs uses many different types of tone, language, and many other devices that create a really good mystery story.
The Monkey’s Paw was orginally produced as part of the play FRIGHT NIGHT by the Ghostlight Theatre Company at the Grant Street Theatre in North Tonawanda, NY, on October 16, 1997.
